The PERSIST model (Perspire, Embrace your strengths, increase your Resilience, be Self-ish, not selfish, become more Internally anchored, and Serve) will help you increase your PQ by showing you how to resist the easy choices that do not support you while simultaneously making it easier to pursue your meaningful goals and dreams.

  • Strategy #1: Perspire: you attract who you are.  What are some characteristics of your ideal client?

  • Step #2: Embrace your strengths.

    • Resist illusion.
    • When are you most alert?
    • Escape confirmatory bias—be willing to listen to differing viewpoints.
    • How to keep your client’s brain from shutting down: “Oh that’s fascinating, I never heard it put quite that way. How did you come up with that?”
    • When it comes to your weaknesses, look for the workaround.


Step #3: Resillence

  • Self-fulfilling prophecy—energy flows where attention goes.
  • Optimistic salespeople are more successful.
  • Optimism results in an increased lifespan and a decrease in chronic diseases.
  • As compared to quitting smoking, which provides 5-10 percent reduction in death rate, optimism provides up to a 100 percent reduction.
  • Anger and pessimism create brain waves resembling those of people suffering from schizophrenia.
  • To reduce pessimism and become more optimistic, avoid vicarious trauma, avoid toxic people, dump complaints, and create a negativity free mindset.

Step #4: Self-ish: You must nourish yourself before you can nourish others.

  • Be Self-ish (kind, loving, and caring toward yourself), not selfish.
  • Use the “Symptom, Source, Solution” model to move beyond the symptoms of your problems and to address the source of the issue.
  • Use the “Feather, Bat, Splat” model to spot symptoms early when it’s easiest to correct the situation.
  • Be wary about how you label temporary symptoms to avoid having them become chronic, long-term issues.
  • Avoid being a “hot” or a “cold” reactor because both patterns contribute to serious illness.

Step #5: Are you internally or externally anchored?

  • Five decades of research on locus of control has shown that having an internal locus of control is correlated with increased self-esteem, better health, and increased effectiveness in leadership positions.
  • Learned helplessness is a powerful predictor of death and serious illness, but hope counteracts it.
  • To become more internally anchored, keep a choice journal.
  • When you make a mistake, own it.
  • Be aware of the power of negative comments. Thrive by surrounding yourself with happy, optimistic, and successful people.

Step #6: Serve

  • Eliminate “help” and seek to be of service rather than being self-serving or selfless.
  • When it comes to choosing service professionals, red flags to look for include that you feel drained after working with them or the person is actually working out their issues through you.
  • Build your karmic bank account with smiles, laughter, gratitude, and the willingness to listen to others and to really hear them.
  • The key to giving is to be open to receiving.

Step #7: Time it right

  • When the timing is right, the doors open effortlessly!
  • To determine which opportunities are right for you, begin by identifying the opportunity costs before focusing on the benefits associated with the opportunity.
  • When you hit a “yellow light,” when do you proceed and when do you stop persisting? Issues to consider include whether the goal aligns with your values, if changing tools or technology could remove part of the blockage, and determining if the choice is the right one or is it just an issue of timing that could resolve itself at a later date.
  • When you start a project, are the rewards great enough to keep you working at it when you hit “the dip”—the point when the fun is gone and moving forward becomes very difficult?
